Huntington Learning Center Celebrates National Parental Involvement Day

Huntington Learning Center Celebrates National Parental Involvement Day This month, the Huntington Learning Center of City will celebrate National Parental Involvement Day on November 16, a day that honors the powerful contributions that parents and caregivers provide in support of students success. This annual celebration held on the third Thursday in November each year was founded in 1995 by Project Appleseed, a nonprofit educational advocacy organization. Eileen Huntington, Co-founder and CEO of Huntington Learning Center says that the center encourages family involvement every day. Parents and caregivers can have a tremendous impact on their childrens school experience, she says. Some of the simplest activities help the mostlike showing an interest in what children are learning at school, helping children prioritize their homework each night and encouraging children to give their school work sincere effort. On National Parental Involvement Day and every day, we express our appreciation to parents who care about their childrens education and want to be a part of it. Huntingtonadds that there are many ways parents can foster their childrens academic success. Here are several suggestions for enhanced parental involvement: Ask teachers about academic milestones for this school year and keep tabs on how your child is progressing toward grade-level standards and checkpoints. Monitor homework time to ensure your child is managing his or her time effectively and working on the most important (i.e. due the soonest) tasks first. Check your childs homework each night for neatness and obvious errors. Set goals together for the semester, school year and longer term. Ask questions each day about what is going well and what is proving challenging in school. Take advantage of opportunities to meet with teachers and staff at back-to-school nights, open houses and conferences. Read all communications from your childs teacher and respond in a timely manner when he or she requests information. Make reading a daily habit for the entire family. Ask your childs teacher(s) if you can volunteer in the classroom or in other ways from home. Huntingtonreminds parents that parental involvement is easier than it might sound. While volunteering in the classroom and for the schools Parent Teacher Organization are great things, there are lots of ways to support your child, she says. Parents should make clear to their children that they believe school is important and encourage them to make it their top priority. Those who communicate this to their children and hold high expectations for them as students will see the positive influence. Child Struggling in School 7 Tips to Solve That Now! - Private Tutoring

Child Struggling in School 7 Tips to Solve That Now! BobbiM May 24, 2015 There’s nothing worse for a parent than to watch your child struggling in school. No matter what the situation or subject, we would all love to be able to ease their burden and resolve any problem that comes along. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work that way and there are times when we simply have to step aside and let them work through it. Sometimes the effort is on their own and sometimes with the assistance of a private tutor or teacher. So what are some basic steps you can take to assist? 1 â€" Check in with the school or teachers that your child currently sees. See if something is going on that they have noticed? Are there social issues? Or is it academic? Are new topics or studying methods being introduced? Like a detective, you want to see what has changed or is different that might be causing the impact on your child. 2 Review grades and homework. How consistent is the work and grades that you see for the last month or several months? If you notice any changes that you can pin point, now is the time to address them. Perhaps it is one course in which case certain topics might have been introduced that are not being fully understood by your son or daughter. If there’s a general downward trend then that takes additional digging to find out the cause of that issue. Are your child’s friends and acquaintances the same or have there been changes? Is there a change in free time usage? New sports, activities or work can have impacts as well. Whatever the case, the burden falls on you to determine what has happened and what options exist. 3 â€" Talk, talk, talk When dealing with teens this can become more difficult since they are not the most chatty of creatures but whatever age, it’s now time to start finding out from the source if there’s anything happening. You might have to be subtle and wait for the best time to have this talk but it is critical if you want to help them to help themselves. Check in on what is going on, use any and all tactics to get them to share what is the latest with school and their classes.     Asking direct and specific questions can help you get the information out of them. Many times they are aware of what’s going on but at a loss as to what to do about it. 4 â€" Determine what are some options? Once you have an idea of what is the root of the cause for the drop in grades you can start taking actions. It always feels better to take action! (At least I’ve found that to be true) If it’s social pressures or other topics along that lines, you want to find the assistance to help cope with and resolve those types of issues. If it’s academic, you can now create a game plan to help your child get back on the road to academic success. 5 â€" What assistance from your school is available? Depending upon your perspective of your child’s school and district, you might want to again ask them for options and assistance. Many schools have tutoring or after school programs that can provide assistance to their students. Based upon what your child needs, this might be an avenue for exploration. Make sure that you check out these options in advance and see if there is a fit. You know your kid and what will work well for them. 6 â€" What outside tutoring or study skills assistance are there? Depending upon what your child needs, you might want to explore private tutors or even private tutoring at home depending on the crazy schedules that we all are keeping these days! This option allows you to hone in on exactly what is needed and the tutor will provide focused programs designed to address exactly those areas. Like PrivateTutoringAtHome.com offers, these types of tutors cover just about every subject you could think of from early education through graduate university studies. Best of all, you can find the right tutor in your area which makes it even more convenient. Tutors provide individualized attention that fits a childs learning style, and many tutors work to make the sessions fun enough that the students actually want to be there, says Fleming. The fun and games teach the student that learning can be a positive experience. Positive tutoring can help a child learn the material, get better grades, and even form a better attitude about school. Having a positive attitude about school and being interested in it really has a tremendous impact on the results that a child gets in school. Any assistance that you can provide will help insure your child is one of the students that thinks of their education in a positive light. 7 â€" Implement and monitor Just because you started a plan for your child doesn’t mean you can rest easy. Now is when you have to help your child stay on track. In addition, monitoring and seeing if there are positive results is critical. If your child has fallen behind, there will be a catch up period that might include additional struggles. Playing catch up is never fun and it’s frustrating for you to watch as a parent and for the child to go through. However, both of you will make it out the other side with a little bit of time, patience and focus. Getting through school successfully is frequently a group effort. Parents, children, schools and various other resources like tutors all combine to help make it a successful educational process. By initiating the first steps today, you can insure that your child will continue to grow, learn and flourish and with an education, be successful later in life as well. And, after all, isn’t that what we each want for our kids? I know that I do! Please let us know your thoughts in the comments below! We’d love to hear your stories. Internat Solling

Internat Solling Internat Solling Our Philosophy Internat Solling is a private boarding school in Lower Saxony funded by a charitable foundation. The original reform concept of the schools foundersstill valid today was to facilitate the development of young adults through holistic education so that they become responsible citizens. A sense of mutual trust, spirited cooperation and belief in each other as unique individuals are the very qualities that define how we live with each other. Our goal is to empower our pupils so that they can fulfil their dreams while also learning to be responsible towards themselves and society as a whole. We also strive to provide our pupils with orientation and to encourage them to pursue their intellectual curiosity and become motivated to perform. Our pupils learn to develop strong yet responsible personalities and remain engaged and conscious of their roles in tomorrows society. Location Campus Our boarding school is located in the beautiful rolling hills of Solling above the town of Holzminden in southern Lower Saxony. The venerable school building is situated on spacious grounds with 50 ha (125 acres) and is the home to our special education programme. Click this article to view a slideshow. Our three large old buildings Lower House (Unterhaus), Middle House (Mittelhaus) and Upper House (Oberhaus) represent our central idea of life and learning: boarding rooms, teacher apartments, classrooms all are located under the same roof. It is no coincidence that we have never had plans to separate the classrooms from residences of both the pupils and teachers. History If Internat Solling were to have been founded in current times, it would have called a parents initiative. Thanks to the dedication and seed money from a group of mothers and fathers, our school was founded more than 100 years ago. This group was lead by Dr. Hermann Schmilinsky, a medical doctor from Hamburg, who encouraged four teachers to found their own school.. These four educators hat previously taught at Germanys first rural boarding school in Ilsenburg that offered new approaches in contrast to the typically authoritarian, militaristic approach of other schools during the Wilhelmine era. Following a dispute with this schools founder Hermann Lietz, they were dismissed but nonetheless remained dedicated to their educational reform concept wherein daily life is to be unified with learning and children are to be taught through the head, heart and hands. At the same time, they also sought a holistic approach to education within the larger context of man and nature. The creation of the first rural boarding schools (Landerziehungsheime) represented a break from urban living to what was then understood to be the healing forces of nature. On 11 November 1908, the four teachers met for a goose dinner on St. Martins day in Wernigerode, Saxony-Anhalt and decided to actually start their own school. It was no accident that they distinguished themselves from other rural boarding schools by founding a school more closely focussed on education. To this day, we still celebrate this occasion with a large goose dinner. View our Brochure

What Employers Expect From You in the Workplace

What Employers Expect From You in the Workplace Image via pixabay.com Employers expect you to ask questions when needed This expectation is especially the case if you are a new employee, but still stands when you have been an employee for an extended amount of time. Like in other areas of your life (mainly school), you may fear to ask questions in case it makes you look inexperienced or incapable of fulfilling your position, but questions are encouraged in many areas of life. Asking a question is inviting an opportunity to learn, and this is something you should remember when you go into a new job. There is a reason for employers and other figures to add If you have any questions, feel free to send them my way or something very similar when speaking to new hires and other employees. You may feel like you are bothering your employer by stopping to ask a question, but you are helping them and yourself out. They most likely will not know you are having difficulty or need assistance unless you otherwise ask them. Employers are not mind-readers, so letting them know when instructions were a little vague, or if you are still unfamiliar with a certain software program will help them work with you down the line, and may even help future employees. What employers expect is for their employees to openly communicate when they are having trouble with a task or need some assistance, so do not be afraid to ask questions. Employers expect you to take initiative Your employer will expect you to take initiative in your position in order to perform well and initiate improvement and growth in not only yourself but to the workplace. If you have not grown as an employee from the day that you started, it reflects a lack of initiative and contribution in the workplace. You want to show that you are actively growing in your position by taking initiative. This can be contributing in meetings and offering your input, showing genuine interest in tasks or events that are taking place. It can also be offering suggestions on how to improve current methods or practices that are used around the workplace. For example, if you see something that is not being done in the most productive way or can be adjusted in order to be more effective, try suggesting it to your employer. This shows that you are actively paying attention to practices taking place around the workplace, and also actively looking at how things can improve. You are reflecting that you care enough to better the company as an employee. Taking initiative shows your employer that you have grown from when you first started at the company as you have grown more comfortable in your position and demonstrated what you can offer to the company. Employers expect reliability   This expectation should go without saying, but what employers expect most often is reliability from their employees. Reliability covers the basics of what is expected from most employees. Employers expect you to show up on time and ready to work. If theres a uniform, you are in it. If you are scheduled to work, you are expected to be there. Employers will expect you to follow company protocol daily as you complete tasks and employers expect you to meet deadlines as they are given, Employers want to be able to give you a task or a deadline without having to constantly check in with you or worry that you have not done it. When you are first starting out as an employee, it is more typical for your employer or a more experienced employee to talk you through some tasks or coach you through your first few deadlines. However, as time passes, you are expected to handle things on your own more often. You can still ask questions, of course, but your employers will expect you to be able to handle most tasks and deadlines by yourself. They will expect you to carry on like every other employee, having your work done without extra worrying on their part. What employers expect is a reliable employee. What employers expect from their  employees varies depending on the work you are taking part in, but these three expectations are more common throughout employers and will give you a sense on what your employer will expect from you.

Irvine SAT Tutoring Writing and Language Questions

Irvine SAT Tutoring Writing and Language Questions Solving the Hardest OFFICIAL SAT Writing and Language Questions (Practice Test 1) Solving the Hardest OFFICIAL SAT Writing and Language Questions (Practice Test 1) All SAT practice questions are not created equal.   Not only do they vary vastly in difficulty from question to question (as you may already know), but they also differ in quality from test maker to test maker.   In other words, different practice tests from different companies may vary wildly in how effective they actually are in preparing you for the SAT. From years of SAT tutoring and teaching experience, I’ve found that the majority of third-party test preparation cannot be trusted to give consistently high-quality questions and tests (book your private Irvine tutor today).   Questions can be too easy, too hard, on material that is not covered on the SAT, have answer choices that SAT writers would not choose, or simply have wrong or ambiguous answers.   This can be daunting when trying to decide which practice tests or books to buy, but luckily there is a simple solution: use the official practice tests. College Board (the group that makes and administers the SAT) hosts their own, free practice tests for you to utilize.   These should be your primary source of practice since these are tests and questions made by the same people who make the real tests.   You will not have to worry about consistency or quality. However, there can still be a problem with taking practice tests if you are a student who has already taken tests and is now looking to maximize their score.   As we mentioned before, all SAT questions vary in difficulty.   If you are taking practice tests and find that you are spending hours doing mostly questions that are too easy or simple for you, then there may be a better way to spend your time. This brings us to this series.   Here, I will be cherry-picking only the most difficult questions from the official SAT practice tests to show and solve.   These questions have been chosen based on my experience using these tests with many students and observing which questions were the most difficult or most likely to be answered incorrectly.   They will be compiled here on posts to this blog so that you can choose to do some of only the hardest and official SAT practice questions to help prepare you for getting a top score on the actual SAT without wasting a lot of time-solving easier problems. First, we will be looking at the most challenging questions in the writing and language section from the first SAT practice test.   For simplicity, I’ve neglected questions that would require you to read entire passages.   Instead, we are left with the most difficult questions that are largely based on grammar.   Note that for the writing section, question difficulty varies randomly rather than having more straightforward questions in the beginning and harder at the end.   Here they are: These six questions are some of the hardest questions on the writing and language section of the first official SAT practice test.   Give these questions a try before checking on the key listed below, and stay tuned for more of the hardest official SAT questions, including the math sections coming soon. ~Key:   2:                 B 7:                 B 8:                 C 16:             C 19:             D 26:             A Book your private Irvine SAT tutor today! How to Build a Home Gym in an Apartment

How to Build a Home Gym in an Apartment Image via Isorepublic.com Buy the right equipment Buying the right equipment is key to building a successful home gym. There are some pieces of equipment that can be used for multiple exercises, so you would get the most for your money if you buy those home gym staples. These pieces of equipment include: A yoga mat A jump rope A set of dumbbells A set of resistance bands With these four pieces of equipment, you can get a great full body workout in, and they don’t even need to be that expensive! Make sure you can store your equipment The pieces of equipment I mentioned earlier are great not only because they are versatile, but because they can be easily stored. You can roll up a yoga mat, jump rope, and resistance bands, and dumbbells don’t have to take up so much space. You have some options, though, about where and how to store them. For example: Hide them. You can hide away your equipment in something like an ottoman. This strategy will help keep your equipment out of the way, and will free up some much-needed space. In plain sight. You can use your equipment pieces as décor by mounting them on the wall! If you do a quick search on Pinterest, you’ll find many great ideas on how you can do this. Vertical storage. If you like the idea of mounting your equipment on the wall, consider organizing them in vertical columns rather than horizontal rows. It’ll free up space on the wall and will look less cluttered. When space is scarce in your small apartment, you’re going to need equipment that can be easily stored. Consider both the type of equipment and the type of storage you will need for them while you are building your home gym. Invest in high-quality machines If you have enough space to have a machine, like an elliptical or treadmill, definitely go for it! However, make sure it is a good quality machine. You will definitely get what you pay for, so do your research and invest in a good machine. It’s also a good idea to measure the amount of space you have available for the machine. This way, you don’t accidentally get something that doesn’t fit in its designated place. A high-quality machine that’s the right size is an excellent investment for your home gym. Protect the space If you’re living in a small apartment, you will likely be using your bedroom or living room as your home gym. It’s very easy to damage your workout space. For example, a dumbbell can fall on your wooden floors or your elliptical can slam into the wall. You don’t want to damage the space while you work out. Get protective rugs for your floors, and make sure your bigger equipment is a safe distance from the walls. This way, you can prevent any of the previously mentioned accidents from happening. Add mirrors Adding mirrors will not only make your apartment look bigger, but it’ll also be great for your home gym. Real gyms have mirrors to help you examine your form and make sure you are doing the exercises properly (and for post-workout selfies, let’s be honest). If you don’t have someone working out with you in your home gym, you will have to examine your own form. A mirror will help you with that. Plus, it will make your space look more like a real gym. Decorate it! Building off the previous point, decorate the space you want to call your home gym. Add pictures, plants, a bulletin board, and even a TV. These things will make your space prettier and will motivate you to work out. Again, Pinterest will have some great ideas for home gym decorations. Space and money are often limiting factors when it comes to building a home gym. But even with limited space and money, you can create a great home gym that’ll inspire you to stay active.
